San Marzano Vini S.P.A. : Wine Sharing Beauty, produces elegant and clean wines by Shanghai Paper

San Marzano is a well-known winemaker from Puglia, located in the heel of Italy’s boot. Cantine San Marzano started in 1962, when 19 vine growers from the village of San Marzano, whose families had farmed the land for decades, banded together to pursue their dream. It has expanded significantly over the years and now attracts over 1,200 high-quality vine growers.

The vines are grown with the utmost regard for the vineyard’s natural rhythm. The native grapes are grown in the lovely Puglian countryside, where gentle sea breezes, azure blue skies, and sun-kissed vines produce ripe, juicy fruit that bursts with flavor.

San Marzano produces elegant and clean wines that pay homage to ancient Puglian wine practices using modern vinification techniques. Wines with distinct varietal characteristics that embody the nature of the local terroir can be produced thanks to this fusion of time-honored tradition, passion, and modern craftsmanship.

San Marzano’s winemaking team is designed to produce a unique and creative style that is instantly recognizable. Davide Ragusa and Caterina Bellanova were both born and raised in Puglia: Davide is a young and talented winemaker who studied oenology in Florence and honed his practical skills over many years. Caterina reflects the exquisite touch needed to produce iconic wines. San Marzano invests in a wide range of young adult profiles in order to get the most out of them.

The Primitivo and San Marzano San Marzano has played a key role in elevating Primitivo’s reputation and profile by making world-class wines and iconic labels. Sessantanni Primitivo di Manduria DOP, for instance, is the product of the President’s intuition, Mr. Francesco Cavallo, who was determined to produce a new wine that could convey the purity of the Primitivo grape in a new and innovative way.

The Cinquanta Rosso d’Italia Collezione is a wine produced to commemorate a triumph. Collezione Cinquanta (= Collection Fifty) was founded in 2012, fifty years after Cantine San Marzano was founded. A one-of-a-kind wine made solely to commemorate the year 1962, when 19 growers planted their most daring dream. As a visual reminder of the past, the front label lists all of the years from the founding to 2012.

No antique, only a precious blend of the region’s most traditional red varieties, like Primitivo and Negroamaro, grown on old vines trained in small bushes known as Alberelli (=small trees). Consumers loved the experiment so much once it hit the market that the winery wanted to make it a permanent project, a jewel among top-tier wines. The wine is a compendium of the land where it comes from, Salento, the southern-most subregion of Puglia, and is a fascinating blend of local red grapes picked over the last best vintages, despite the lack of a regional indication. It’s a strong red with a nuanced bouquet of ripe red fruits and spices, barrel-aged for 12 months, well-structured, and beautiful balance, all thanks to the winemakers’ meticulous work and expertise.
