Domaine Schmitt & Carrer is a family business based in Kientzheim (Alsace) managed by Sylvie, Roland and Anne-Cécile CARRER, the estate includes 14 hectares certified Organic Agriculture by Ecocert.
With great success, only a couple of families can trace their roots back hundreds of years. Fewer people can still claim that the vineyards have been working for three centuries. Since at least the first half of the 17th century, the Schmitts have been wine growers in the Alsace region. Since 1985, when Roger Schmitt set it up with his son-in-law, Roland Carrer, the current winery has been in the family.
Today, Roland runs a winery with his wife, Sylvie, and their daughter, Anne-Cécile. Located in the village of Kientzheim in the Haut-Rhin region of Alsace in northeastern France, Domaine Schmitt-Carrer is located.
Domaine Schmitt-vineyards Carrer’s cover 15 hectares and are grown using organic methods. Since 2012, the vineyards have been fully organic. With some marl-limestone, the soil is mostly clay-limestone. All seven recognized Alsace grape varieties are cultivated, namely Sylvaner, Pinot Noir, Blanc and Gris, Riesling, Gewurztraminer, and Muscat.
The only red grape variety permitted within the Alsace appellation is Pinot Noir. There are 3 Grand Crus-Schlossberg, Furstentum and Wineck-Schlossberg among their diverse selection of wines. The vineyards of the Grand Cru account for 21% of the vineyards of the Domaine Schmitt-Carrer and have some truly excellent wines.
Domaine Schmitt-Carrer Winemaking Methods
A Crémant, a rosé, and many special late harvest wines are produced by Domaine Schmitt-Carrer as well as classic single-variety wines. The grapes are pressed for about 7 to 8 hours for the late harvest wines, about twice the normal time. This is for even more sugar to be removed. The grapes are carefully packed into small boxes to provide further cover. The harvesting is manual.
